Our Story

Our story began in 1990, when sisters Abby and Ann decided to give their go at running the already established Turner's Grocery, in Big Laurel. Their Aunt Ila Turner was ready to retire, and despite them having other jobs and families, they wanted to serve the community through this business. They leased that location for 6 years until another community store owner, Henry "Red" Miniard and his wife Jewel, offered their store, inventory, and property to Abby and Ann to purchase. They took the offer, and the "new" Turner's Grocery was relocated just around the corner from the original.

Over the years, Abby and Ann's brother Randy managed and ran the store, with the help of their sister Lana, daughters Sarah and Megan, and several community staff members. The store served the local community and nearby mining operations. At the new location, they put in a small deli, serving burgers, sides, and Hunt Brothers pizzas. They sold KY hunting and fishing licenses and kept a small selection of necessities on the shelves.

In 2016, Randy passed away. Around that time, local mining operations began shutting down, business slowed, and the future of the store became uncertain. Abby and Ann decided to do what they could to keep it open and managed to do so. In 2021, Abby passed away, leaving Ann the sole owner of Turner's Grocery. During this time, she was still working an outside job and caring for her mother, Myrtle. Ann's daughter Megan stepped in as owner in 2024, starting a new generation of ownership. With the popularity of a video by YouTube's Ignited Coyote, tourism development in Harlan and surrounding counties, and the hard work of community staff, Turner's Grocery continues to serve the Big Laurel community and beyond.

Highlighting people and places, the Ignited Coyote team recognized Turner’s Grocery for what it does best- providing essentials and a gathering spot for locals and travelers. Check out their YouTube channel!
